How did League of Legends Rise in Popularity?

In the beginning, LoL was a very different game. Today we have our fair match-making system, understandable gameplay, and as many skins as we want. And the only problematic thing that we can agree on is the client, which sometimes takes on its own.

But, some League of Legends players may remember a time where there was actual chaos in the game. Laggy servers and buggy gameplay – no one was immune to the numerous issues that arose every day. So, how did a game like League of Legends rose to such high numbers of active players on a daily basis?

First of all, we have to give credit to Riot Games for addressing a large percent of the issues. Champions were fixed, items were removed and new ones added, new map features were introduced. And in the end, we ended up with the League mode we have now. Regular patch updates, bug fixes, and in-depth beta testing are just parts of it.

League of Legends started in North America. In the beginning, the NA server was the only existing one. And the European and the other servers came almost a year later. But despite everything, the interest in the game kept growing since day one. Why is that?

Well, we can say that it’s because League of Legends is such a great game. And we wouldn’t be wrong because, at the time, it was a brand new sensation in the world of competitive video games. A 5v5 PvP arena that required knowledge, skill, and strategy.

Those were the fundamental things that launched LoL in the world of Esports. And Esports made LoL more popular than it could’ve ever been imagined!

It’s no secret that Esports massively influenced the growth of League of Legends’ player count. It helped spread LoL around the world and made it more popular than ever. So how does the professional Esports League of Legends scene work?

Well, the LoL professional scene is divided into multiple leagues, each representing the region and servers they’re in. For example, the North American server and region have the NA LCS league throughout the year. Only the best teams from the United States, Canada, and the rest of NA are playing in the LCS. And the same goes for the European LEC, the South Korean LCK, the Chinese LPL, and the rest.

Now, all these individual leagues work towards the same goal – to launch their best team on an international scale. Mid-Season Invitational, or MSI, is the first international tournament that is happening each year for League of Legends. It’s hosted in different states and cities every time, and teams from all leagues participate in it. MSI is a very serious competition, organized by Riot Games themselves, and has been around since 2015.

However, the most important event for the League of Legends Esports world is the World Championship. Worlds is the final clash between the best teams at the end of the year. The LoL World Championship is the grandest Esports competition, and it has broken viewership numbers many times now. For example, the finals of Worlds 2028 had a record-breaking 99.6 million unique viewers around the world. And just for a comparison, the American Superbowl in 2019 had only 98.2 millionviewers.

But, if there is one reason why the LoL Esports scene is getting so many viewers and the game so many more players, it’s the teams and players!

The Best League of Legends Esports Teams and Players

When we’re talking about pro League of Legends players, we really mean Legends. The situation is like in any other sport – the best players inspire the rest of us to try the game, improve, and become the best.

One person that deserves the most recognition for inspiring LoL players is Faker. Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok is a true icon within the League of Legends community. His debut match back in season 3 in the LCK league showed us his extraordinary talent for the game. Over the next couple of years, Faker would go on and win most of the home and international tournaments. He developed into the absolute best League of Legends player of all time.

But, Faker isn’t the only influential figure in the community. Pros like Bjergsen, Doublelift, Meteos, Diamondprox, xPeke, and many more have inspired a lot of people to join or stay with the game as well. And today’s stars like Caps, ShowMaker, Perkz, Deft, and SofM, are only continuing that tradition.

On the other hand, teams like Team SoloMid, T1, G2 Esports, Cloud 9, Fnatic, and others have left a true legacy behind them. Fans around the globe cheer for their teams and regard them as a vital reason why they’re still watching and playing the game. So, you can clearly see how the League of Legends Esports scene has influenced the growth of the game’s player base throughout the year.

Did Streamers Influence LoL’s Playerbase?

Definitely yes! Thanks to streaming, League has become the most-watched Esports title. During an important event, like the World Championship, third-party platforms like Twitch and YouTube gather to 500 000 live viewers on Riot Game’s official channels. And during the regular days, League’s viewership on Twitch stays on the number one spot – 150 000 – 200 000 average viewers live every second! No other video game has come even close.

Now, the big reason why League has so much attention on Twitch is the actual streamers themselves. Characters like Tyler1, Imaqtpie, Gross Gore, Doublelift, and Midbeast, gather tremendous amounts of audience people every day. They have a massive fanbase and followers that contribute to the League of Legends player count. They perform and teach other players how to be better at the game, resulting in a steady growth-over-time effect for League’s popularity too.

Nearly all professional League of Legends players have tried streaming too. Faker, Caps, and Perkz are among the most famous ones. They don’t have the widest of schedules when it comes to streaming, but they still make efforts to steam during their free time.

Streaming is a fantastic tool for marketing and publishing content, which is why it also works wonderfully for LoL. It’s easily accessible, and anyone can watch/stream their favorite games for free. League of Legends has been part of the streaming business since day one. People enjoy watching others managing to defeat their own opponents. We can learn much from other’s people mistakes, and League players are willing to put in the time to advance their skills in the game.

So, as much as the international tournaments have influenced League’s player numbers, the streamers have nearly that much too!

Moving into the next year Riot Games released another statement about League of Legends player count. They had again given a nifty infographic to help understand the state of the game in 2012.

What we can take away from the League of Legends graph is that League of Legends had

  • 70 Million registrations
  • 32 Million monthly players
  • 12 Million daily players
  • 3 Million concurrent players.

They had also given other information such as League of Legends has been played for more than 1 Billion play hours every month, the main age group from 16-35 and more information as you can see below.

Fast-forwarding two years into the future, Riot Games released another official statement giving details about the state of League of Legends. This time they had not come with any infographics but rather straight up information.

From the statement released by Riot Games, we understand that League of Legends now had

  • 65 Million monthly players
  • 27 Million daily players
  • 8 Million peak concurrent players

Although Riot didn’t release as much information as before it was still apparent League of Legends was still growing. It had taken a lot longer than previously, but Riot had managed to double their monthly and daily players bringing the total monthly players to 67 million.

Riot did not release any statement when they reached this mark, but according to analytical data and certain League of Legends graphs, we understand that the League of Legends player count had reached about 100 Million monthly players in 2017. 

If League of Legends was a country, it would be ranked at the 15th Position as the population per country out of the 200+ countries in the world. That is right, there are only 15 countries in 2020 that have a population of over 100 million.

Don't Play League Of Legends Just Because You Like Arcane

If Arcane sparked your interest in League of Legends, there are better ways to experience Runeterra than playing the game.

So you’ve just watched the first three episodes of Arcane on Netflix and now you’re interested in League of Legends. Before you click that shiny “Play Now” button on the League website, a word of caution: don’t do it. For the love of God, do not start playing League of Legends in 2021 unless you have unlimited time and patience, because that’s the only way you’re going to find any success with it. Arcane does a wonderful job of welcoming newcomers to the world of Runeterra, and League of Legends couldn’t be more different. It’s possibly the sweatiest game of all time, filled with the sweatiest, angriest players who don’t care that you’re still learning. Take it from me, someone who got bullied by League players until I quit: just don’t.

If the story, characters, and world of Arcane grabbed your attention, League of Legends doesn’t actually have that much to offer. Playing as your favorite characters from the show can be cool, and there are in-game voice lines and cosmetics that help tell the story, but practically all of League’s storytelling happens outside of the game. If you’re craving more, head over to the League of Legends Universe page, where you’ll find dozens of comic books, hundreds of short stories, and a collection of short films. Instead of spending the next 100 hours grinding the ladder in League, you can instead dive into a decade of excellent lore entries for every character and region. You can even find stories from League’s alternate universes: Star Guardian, Odyssey, and K/DA, where the champions are reimagined as K-pop stars. There’s also an interactive map of Runeterra where you can explore each region and learn about its politics and central characters. The Universe page is an incredible resource for anyone interested in lore and a great place to start after Arcane.

If you really want to get into the game, I’m not going to stop you, but I would highly encourage you to start with Wild Rift. League of Legends: Wild Rift is a mobile adaptation of League (stay with me) that streamlines all of the nitty-gritty stuff about the MOBA. It came out earlier this year on Android and iOS and, until Pokemon Unite, was easily the most approachable game in the genre. The map is smaller, the matches are shorter, the item shop is simplified, and most importantly, chat is disabled. This is a great way to learn the core mechanics of a MOBA and familiarize yourself with the Champions - of which there are only 57 as opposed to League’s 157. Even if you are mobile game averse, Wild Rift is worth a shot. MOBAs work really well with touch-screen controls, and Wild Rift doesn’t have any of the predatory, anti-player nonsense that most mobile games have. You can buy a battle pass and you can pay for skins, but that's the extent of it. I’ve played very casually over the last few months and have earned more than 20 champions and a few skins just from completing missions like “Play two games” and “Eliminate five opponents”. This is the ideal way to get started in League.

Legends of Runeterra also deserves an honorable mention. Digital trading card games can often feel like a giant pit you dump all of your money into, but Runeterra is actually pretty generous. You can earn enough to be competitive by completing quests, and there are quite a few different game modes if you aren’t interested in PVP. The single-player mode has some nice story content too. If you were at all taken by Professor Heimerdinger in Arcane, he makes frequent appearances on the story side of Legends of Runeterra.

League of Legends has an incredible world filled with lots of great stories, but you won’t really get any of that by playing League of Legends. You will get called a slur though.

League of Legends (LoL), commonly referred to as League, is a 2009 multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a custom map for Warcraft III, Riot's founders sought to develop a stand-alone game in the same genre. Since its release in October 2009, the game has been free-to-play and is monetized through purchasable character customization. The game is available for Microsoft Windows and macOS.

In the game, two teams of five players battle in player versus player combat, each team occupying and defending their half of the map. Each of the ten players controls a character, known as a "champion", with unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, champions become more powerful by collecting experience points, earning gold, and purchasing items to defeat the opposing team. In the game's main mode, Summoner's Rift, a team wins by pushing through to the enemy base and destroying their "Nexus", a large structure located within.

League of Legends received generally positive reviews; critics highlighted its accessibility, character designs, and production value. The game's long lifespan has resulted in a critical reappraisal, with reviews trending positively. The negative and abusive in-game behavior of its players, criticized since early in the game's lifetime, persists despite Riot's attempts to fix the problem. In 2019, the game regularly peaked at eight million concurrent players, and its popularity has led to tie-ins such as music videos, comic books, short stories, and an animated series. Its success has also spawned several spin-off video games, including a mobile version and a digital collectible card game. A massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the property is in development.

The domestic leagues culminate in the annual League of Legends World Championship. The 2019 championship had over 100 million unique viewers, peaking at a concurrent viewership of 44 million. Domestic and international events have been broadcast on livestreaming websites such as Twitch, YouTube, Bilibili, as well as cable television sports channel ESPN.

Gameplay

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in which the player controls a character ("champion") with a set of unique abilities from an isometric perspective.[2][3] As of April 2021[update], there are 155 champions available to play.[4] Over the course of a match, champions gain levels by accruing experience points (XP) through killing enemies.[5] Items also increase champions' strength,[6] and are bought with gold, which players accrue passively over time and earn actively by defeating the opposing team's minions,[2] champions, or defensive structures.[5][6] In the main game mode, Summoner's Rift, items are purchased through a shop menu available to players only when their champion is in the team's base.[2] Each match is discrete; levels and items do not transfer from one match to another.[7]

Summoner's Rift is the flagship game mode of League of Legends and the most prominent in professional-level play.[8][9][10] The mode has a ranked competitive ladder; a matchmaking system determines a player's skill level and generates a starting rank from which they can climb. There are nine tiers; the least skilled are Iron, Bronze, and Silver, and the highest are Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger.[11][a]

Two teams of five players compete to destroy the opposing team's "Nexus", which is guarded by the enemy champions and defensive structures known as "turrets".[13] Each team's Nexus is located in their base, where players start the game or reappear after death.[13]Non-player characters known as minions are generated from each team's Nexus and advance towards the enemy base along three lanes guarded by turrets: top, middle, and bottom.[14] Each team's base contains three "inhibitors", one behind the third tower from the center of each lane. Destroying one of the enemy team's inhibitors causes stronger allied minions to spawn in that lane, and allows the attacking team to damage the enemy Nexus and the two turrets guarding it.[15] The regions in between the lanes are collectively known as the "jungle", which is inhabited by "monsters" that, like minions, respawn at regular intervals. Like minions, monsters provide gold and XP when killed.[16] Another, more powerful class of monster resides within the river that separates each team's jungle.[17] These monsters require multiple players to defeat and grant special abilities to their slayers' team. For example, teams can gain a powerful allied unit after killing the Rift Herald, permanent strength boosts by killing dragons, and stronger, more durable minions by killing Baron Nashor.[18]

Summoner's Rift matches can last from as little as 15 minutes to over an hour.[19] Although the game does not enforce where players may go, conventions have arisen over the game's lifetime: typically one player goes in the top lane, one in the middle lane, one in the jungle, and two in the bottom lane.[2][5][20] Players in a lane kill minions to accumulate gold and XP (termed "farming") and try to prevent their opponent from doing the same. A fifth champion, known as a "jungler", farms the jungle monsters and, when powerful enough, assists their teammates in a lane.[21]

Other modes

Besides Summoner's Rift, League of Legends has two other permanent game modes. ARAM ("All Random, All Mid") is a five-versus-five mode like Summoner's Rift, but on a map called Howling Abyss with only one long lane, no jungle area, and with champions randomly chosen for players.[22][23][24] Given the small size of the map, players must be vigilant in avoiding enemy abilities.[25]

Teamfight Tactics is an auto battler released in June 2019 and made a permanent game mode the following month.[26][27] As with others in its genre, players build a team and battle to be the last one standing. Players do not directly affect combat but position their units on a board for them to fight automatically against opponents each round.[28]Teamfight Tactics is available for iOS and Android and has cross-platform play with the Windows and macOS clients.[29]

Other game modes have been made available temporarily, typically aligning with in-game events.[30][31] Ultra Rapid Fire (URF) mode was available for two weeks as a 2014 April Fools Day prank. In the mode, champion abilities have no resource cost, significantly reduced cooldown timers, increased movement speed, reduced healing, and faster attacks.[32][33] A year later, in April 2015, Riot disclosed that they had not brought the mode back because its unbalanced design resulted in player "burnout". The developer also said the costs associated with maintaining and balancing URF were too high.[34] Other temporary modes include One for All and Nexus Blitz. One for All has players pick a champion for all members of their team to play.[35][36] In Nexus Blitz, players participate in a series of mini-games on a compressed map.[37]

Development

Riot Games' founders Brandon Beck and Marc Merill had an idea for a spiritual successor to Defense of the Ancients, known as DotA. A mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, DotA required players to buy Warcraft III and install custom software; The Washington Post's Brian Crecente said the mod "lacked a level of polish and was often hard to find and set up".[38] Phillip Kollar of Polygon noted that Blizzard Entertainment supported Warcraft III with an expansion pack, then shifted their focus to other projects while the game still had players. Beck and Merill sought to create a game that would be supported over a significantly longer period.[39]

Beck and Merill held a DotA tournament for students at the University of Southern California, with an ulterior goal of recruitment. There they met Jeff Jew, later a producer on League of Legends. Jew was very familiar with DotA and spent much of the tournament teaching others how to play. Beck and Merill invited him to an interview, and he joined Riot Games as an intern.[38] Beck and Merill recruited two figures involved with DotA: Steve Feak, one of its designers,[38] and Steve Mescon, who ran a support website to assist players.[40][41] Feak said early development was highly iterative, comparing it to designing DotA.[42]

A demonstration of League of Legends built in the Warcraft III game engine was completed in four months and then shown at the 2007 Game Developers Conference.[39] There, Beck and Merill had little success with potential investors. Publishers were confused by the game's free-to-play business model and lack of a single-player mode. The free-to-play model was untested outside of Asian markets,[38] so publishers were primarily interested in a retail release, and the game's capacity for a sequel.[39] In 2008, Riot reached an agreement with holding company Tencent to oversee the game's launch in China.[39]

League of Legends was announced October 7, 2008, for Microsoft Windows.[43][44]Closed beta-testing began in April 2009.[43][45] Upon the launch of the beta, seventeen champions were available.[46] Riot initially aimed to ship the game with 20 champions but doubled the number before the game's full release in North America on October 27, 2009.[47][48] The game's full name was announced as League of Legends: Clash of Fates. Riot planned to use the subtitle to signal when future content was available, but decided they were silly and dropped it before launch.[39]

Post-release

League of Legends receives regular updates in the form of patches. Although previous games had utilized patches to ensure no one strategy dominated, League of Legends' patches made keeping pace with the developer's changes a core part of the game. In 2014, Riot standardized their patch cadence to once approximately every two or three weeks.[49]

The development team includes hundreds of game designers and artists. In 2016, the music team had four full-time composers and a team of producers creating audio for the game and its promotional materials.[50] As of 2021[update], the game has over 150 champions,[4] and Riot Games periodically overhauls the visuals and gameplay of the oldest in the roster.[51] Although only available for Microsoft Windows at launch, a Mac version of the game was made available in March 2013.[52]

Revenue model

League of Legends uses a free-to-play business model. Several forms of purely cosmetic customization—for example, "skins" that change the appearance of champions—can be acquired after buying an in-game currency called Riot Points (RP).[53] Skins have five main pricing tiers, ranging from $4 to $25.[54] As virtual goods, they have high profit margins.[50] A loot box system has existed in the game since 2016; these are purchasable virtual "chests" with randomized, cosmetic items.[55] These chests can be bought outright or acquired at a slower rate for free by playing the game. The practice has been criticized as a form of gambling.[56] In 2019, Riot Games' CEO said that he hoped loot boxes would become less prevalent in the industry.[57] Riot has also experimented with other forms of monetization. In August 2019, they announced an achievement system purchasable with Riot Points. The system was widely criticized for its high cost and low value.[58]

In 2014, Ubisoft analyst Teut Weidemann said that only around 4% of players paid for cosmetics—significantly lower than the industry standard of 15 to 25%. He argued the game was only profitable because of its large player base.[59] In 2017, the game had a revenue of US$2.1 billion;[60] in 2018, a lower figure of $1.4 billion still positioned it as one of the highest-grossing games of 2018.[61] In 2019, the number rose to $1.5 billion, and again to $1.75 billion in 2020.[61][60] According to magazine Inc., players collectively played three billion hours every month in 2016.[50]

Before 2014, players existed in-universe as political leaders, or "Summoners", commanding champions to fight on the Fields of Justice—for example, Summoner's Rift—to avert a catastrophic war.[62] Sociologist Matt Watson said the plot and setting were bereft of the political themes found in other role-playing games, and presented in reductive "good versus evil" terms.[63] In the game's early development, Riot did not hire writers, and designers wrote character biographies only a paragraph long.[39]

In September 2014, Riot Games rebooted the game's fictional setting, removing summoners from the game's lore to avoid "creative stagnation".[62][64] Luke Plunkett wrote for Kotaku that, although the change would upset long-term fans, it was necessary as the game's player base grew in size.[65] Shortly after the reboot, Riot hired Warhammer writer Graham McNeill.[66] Riot's storytellers and artists create flavor text, adding "richness" to the game, but very little of this is seen as a part of normal gameplay. Instead, that work supplies a foundation for the franchise's expansion into other media,[50] such as comic books and spin-off video games.[67][68] The Fields of Justice were replaced by a new fictional setting—a planet called Runeterra. The setting has elements from several genres—from Lovecraftian horror to traditional sword and sorcery fantasy.[69]

Reception

Reception

League of Legends received generally favorable reviews on its initial release, according to review aggregator website Metacritic.[70] Many publications noted the game's high replay value.[82][83][84]Kotaku reviewer Brian Crecente admired how items altered champion play styles.[84] Quintin Smith of Eurogamer concurred, praising the amount of experimentation offered by champions.[85] Comparing it to Defense of the Ancients, Rick McCormick of GamesRadar+ said that playing League of Legends was "a vote for choice over refinement".[86]

Given the game's origins, other reviewers frequently compared aspects of it to DotA. According to GamesRadar+ and GameSpot, League of Legends would feel familiar to those who had already played DotA.[73][87] The game's inventive character design and lively colors distinguished the game from its competitors.[79] Smith concluded his review by noting that, although there was not "much room for negativity", Riot's goal of refining DotA had not yet been realized.[85]

Although Crecente praised the game's free-to-play model,[84]GameSpy's Ryan Scott was critical of the grind required for non-paying players to unlock key gameplay elements, calling it unacceptable in a competitive game.[88][b] Many outlets said the game was underdeveloped.[83][79] A physical version of the game was available for purchase from retailers; GameSpot's Kevin VanOrd said it was an inadvisable purchase because the value included $10 of store credit for an unavailable store.[83] German site GameStar noted that none of the bonuses in that version were available until the launch period had ended and refused to carry out a full review.[90]IGN's Steve Butts compared the launch to the poor state of CrimeCraft's release earlier in 2009; he indicated that features available during League of Legends's beta were removed for the release, even for those who purchased the retail version.[79] Matches took unnecessarily long to find for players, with long queue times,[84][79][91] and GameRevolution mentioned frustrating bugs.[92]

Some reviewers addressed toxicity in the game's early history. Crecente wrote that the community was "insular" and "whiney" when losing.[84] Butts speculated that League of Legends inherited many of DotA's players, who had developed a reputation for being "notoriously hostile" to newcomers.[79]

Reassessment

Regular updates to the game have resulted in a reappraisal by some outlets; IGN's second reviewer, Leah B. Jackson, explained that the website's original review had become "obsolete".[80] Two publications increased their original scores: GameSpot from 6 to 9,[75][76] and IGN from 8 to 9.2.[79][80] The variety offered by the champion roster was described by Steven Strom of PC Gamer as "fascinating";[81] Jackson pointed to "memorable" characters and abilities.[80] Although the items had originally been praised at release by other outlets such as Kotaku[84] Jackson's reassessment criticized the lack of item diversity and viability, noting that the items recommended to the player by the in-game shop were essentially required because of their strength.[80]

While reviewers were pleased with the diverse array of play styles offered by champions and their abilities,[80][76][81] Strom thought that the female characters still resembled those in "horny Clash of Clans clones" in 2018.[81] Two years before Strom's review, a champion designer responded to criticism by players that a young, female champion was not conventionally attractive. He argued that limiting female champions to one body type was constraining, and said progress had been made in Riot's recent releases.[93]

Comparisons persisted between the game and others in the genre. GameSpot's Tyler Hicks wrote that new players would pick up League of Legends quicker than DotA and that the removal of randomness-based skills made the game more competitive.[76] Jackson described League of Legends' rate of unlock for champions as "a model of generosity", but less than DotA's sequel, Dota 2 (2013), produced by Valve, wherein characters are unlocked by default.[80] Strom said the game was fast-paced compared to Dota 2's "yawning" matches, but slower than those of Blizzard Entertainment's "intentionally accessible" MOBA Heroes of the Storm (2015).[81]

Accolades

At the first Game Developers Choice Awards in 2010, the game won four major awards: Best Online Technology, Game Design, New Online Game, and Visual Arts.[94] At the 2011 Golden Joystick Awards, it won Best Free-to-Play Game.[95] Music produced for the game won a Shorty Award,[96] and was nominated at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[97]

League of Legends has received awards for its contribution to esports. It was nominated for Best Esports Game at The Game Awards in 2017 and 2018,[98][99] then won in 2019 and 2020.[100][101] Specific events organized by Riot for esports tournaments have been recognized by awards ceremonies. Also at The Game Awards, the Riot won Best Esports Event for the 2019 and 2020 League World Championships.[100][101] At the 39th Sports Emmy Awards in 2018, League of Legends won Outstanding Live Graphic Design for the 2017 world championship; as part of the pre-competition proceedings, Riot used augmented reality technology to have a computer-generated dragon fly across the stage.[102][103][104]

Player behavior

League of Legends' player base has a longstanding reputation for "toxicity"—negative and abusive in-game behavior.[105][106][107] Riot Games has acknowledged the problem and explained that only a small portion of the game's players are consistently toxic. According to Jeffrey Lin, the lead designer of social systems, the majority of negative behavior is committed by players "occasionally acting out".[108] However, a study by the Anti-Defamation League has shown that League of Legends is the one of the most common video games to experience harassment while playing, with 76% of players reporting harassment in game.[109] Several major systems have been implemented to tackle the issue. One such measure is basic report functionality; players can report teammates or opponents who violate the game's code of ethics. The in-game chat is also monitored by algorithms that detect several types of abuse.[108] An early system was the "Tribunal"—players who met certain requirements were able to review reports sent to Riot. If enough players determined that the messages were a violation, an automated system would punish them.[110] Lin said that eliminating toxicity was an unrealistic goal, and the focus should be on rewarding good player behavior.[111] To that effect, Riot reworked the "Honor system" in 2017, allowing players to award teammates with virtual medals following games, for one of three positive attributes. Acquiring these medals increases a player's "Honor level", rewarding them with free loot boxes over time.[112]

In esports

League of Legends is one of the world's largest esports, described by The New York Times as its "main attraction".[113] Online viewership and in-person attendance for the game's esports events outperformed those of the National Basketball Association, the World Series, and the Stanley Cup in 2016.[114] For the 2019 and 2020 League of Legends World Championship finals, Riot Games reported 44 and 45 peak million concurrent viewers respectively.[115][116]Harvard Business Review said that League of Legends epitomized the birth of the esports industry.[117]

As of April 2021[update], Riot Games operates 12 regional leagues internationally,[118][119][120] four of which—China, Europe, Korea, and North America—have franchised systems.[121][122][123][124][125] In 2017, this system comprised 109 teams and 545 players.[126] League games are typically livestreamed on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.[116] The company sells streaming rights to the game;[50] the North American league playoff is broadcast on cable television by sports network ESPN.[127] In China, the rights to stream international events such as the World Championships and the Mid-Season Invitational were sold to Bilibili in Fall 2020 for a three-year deal reportedly worth US$113 million,[128][129][130] while exclusive streaming rights for the domestic and other regional leagues are owned by Huya Live.[131] The game's highest-paid professional players have commanded salaries of above $1 million—over three times the highest-paid players of Overwatch.[132] The scene has attracted investment from businesspeople otherwise unassociated with esports, such as retired basketball player Rick Fox, who founded his own team.[133] In 2020, his team's slot in the North American league was sold to the Evil Geniuses organization for $33 million.[134]

Games

For the 10th anniversary of League of Legends in 2019, Riot Games announced several games at various stages of production that were directly related to the League of Legendsintellectual property (IP).[135][136] A stand-alone version of Teamfight Tactics was announced for mobile operating systems iOS and Android at the event and released in March 2020. The game has cross-platform play with the Windows and macOS clients.[29]Legends of Runeterra, a free-to-play digital collectible card game, launched in April 2020 for Microsoft Windows; the game features characters from League of Legends.[137][138][139]League of Legends: Wild Rift is a version of the game for mobile operating systems Android, iOS, and unspecified consoles.[140][c] Instead of porting the game from League of Legends, Wild Rift's character models and environments were entirely rebuilt.[143] The third and final League of Legends-related announcement at the anniversary event was a single-player, turn-based role-playing game titled Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. The game is set for a 2021 release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.[68] It will be the first title released under Riot Games' publishing arm, Riot Forge, wherein non-Riot studios develop games using League of Legends characters.[144] In December 2020, Greg Street, Vice-President of IP and Entertainment at Riot Games, announced that a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the game is in development.[145]

Music

Riot Games' first venture into music was in 2014 with the virtual heavy metal band Pentakill, promoting a skin line of the same name.[146][147] Pentakill is composed of six champions. Their music was primarily made by Riot Games' in-house music team but features cameos by Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee and Danny Lohner, a former member of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. Their second album, Grasp of the Undying, reached Number 1 on the iTunes metal charts in 2017.[147]

Pentakill was followed by K/DA, a virtual pop group composed of four champions. As with Pentakill, K/DA is promotional material for a skin line by the same name.[148] Its debut single, "Pop/Stars", premiered at the 2018 League of Legends World Championship, garnering over 380 million views on YouTube and mainstream interest from people unfamiliar with League of Legends.[149] After a two-year hiatus, Riot Games released a second single from the virtual group in August 2020.[150]

In 2019, Riot created a virtual hip hop group called True Damage,[151] featuring five champions.[152] The vocalists performed a live version of the group's debut song, "Giants", during the opening ceremony of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship, alongside holographic versions of their characters.[152] The in-game cosmetics promoted by the music video featured a collaboration with fashion house Louis Vuitton.[153]

Comics

Riot announced a collaboration with Marvel Comics in 2018.[67] Riot had previously experimented with releasing comics through its website.[154][155] Shannon Liao of The Verge noted that the comic books were "a rare opportunity for Riot to showcase its years of lore that has often appeared as an afterthought".[67] The first comic was League of Legends: Ashe—Warmother, which debuted in 2018, followed by League of Legends: Lux that same year.[156] A print version of the latter was released in 2019.[157]

Animated series

In a video posted to celebrate the tenth anniversary of League of Legends, Riot announced an animated television series, Arcane.[158] In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, head of creative development Greg Street said the series is "not a light-hearted show. There are some serious themes that we explore there, so we wouldn't want kids tuning in and expecting something that it's not."[158] The series will be set in Piltover and Zaun and is expected to include the champions Jinx and Vi.[159][160] The series was set to be released in 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.[161] The series premiered on Netflix on November 6 following the 2021 League of Legends World Championship.[162]

Don't Play League Of Legends Just Because You Like Arcane

If Arcane sparked your interest in League of Legends, there are better ways to experience Runeterra than playing the game.

So you’ve just watched the first three episodes of Arcane on Netflix and now you’re interested in League of Legends. Before you click that shiny “Play Now” button on the League website, a word of caution: don’t do it. For the love PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW God, do not start playing League of Legends in 2021 unless you have unlimited time and patience, because that’s the only way you’re going to find any success with it. Arcane does a wonderful job of welcoming newcomers to the world of Runeterra, and League of Legends couldn’t be more different. It’s possibly the sweatiest game of all time, filled with the sweatiest, angriest players who don’t care that you’re still learning. Take it from me, someone who got bullied by League players until I quit: just don’t.

If the story, characters, and world of Arcane grabbed your attention, League of Legends doesn’t actually have that much to offer. Playing as your favorite characters from the show can be cool, and there are in-game voice lines and cosmetics that help tell the story, PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW, but practically all of League’s storytelling happens outside of the game. Instead of spending the next 100 hours grinding the ladder in League, you can instead dive into a decade of excellent lore entries for every character and region. If you really want to get into the game, I’m not going to stop you, but I would PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW encourage you to start with Wild Rift. League of Legends: Wild Rift is a mobile adaptation of League (stay with me) that streamlines all of the nitty-gritty stuff about the MOBA. It came out earlier this year on Android and iOS and, until Pokemon Unite, was easily the most approachable game in the genre. The map is smaller, the matches are shorter, the item shop is simplified, and most importantly, chat is disabled. This is a great way to learn the core mechanics of a MOBA and familiarize yourself with the Champions - of which there are only 57 as opposed to League’s 157. Even if you are mobile game averse, Wild Rift is worth a shot. MOBAs work really well with touch-screen controls, and Wild Rift doesn’t have any of the predatory, anti-player nonsense that most mobile games have. You can buy a battle pass and you can pay for skins, but that's the extent of it. I’ve played very casually over the last few months and have earned more than 20 champions and a few skins just from completing missions like “Play two games” and “Eliminate five opponents&rdquo. This is the ideal way to get started in League.

Legends of Runeterra also deserves an honorable mention. Digital trading card games can often feel like a giant pit you dump all of your money into, but Runeterra is actually pretty generous. You can earn enough to be competitive by completing quests, and there are quite a few different game modes if you aren’t interested in PVP. The single-player mode has some nice story content too. If you were at all taken by Professor Heimerdinger in Arcane, he makes frequent appearances on the story side of Legends of Runeterra.

League of Legends has an incredible world filled with lots of great stories, but you won’t really get any of that by playing League of Legends. You will get called a slur though.

Game is great, except for matchmaking.

The game itself is great,it’s logical that it won’t be 100% the same as the one that we play on PC due to the limitations of mobile devices. It makes one enjoy the thrill of playing the game on mobile but the biggest issue i find here is the matchmaking. When i first started playing rank(solo) i got teamed up with unranked and bronze players, which is expected but what i did not expect was to be playing against players ranked in silver and gold. It continued to be absurd when i climbed up to the rank of platinum. when i reached plat 4, almost all my enemies are always a whole division higher and my teammates are of the same division or lower. It might be rng or something, PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW, but PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW by the love of god atleast balance it out. The game shows no mercy for solo rank players. I really don’t mind going against people who are a division higher than me, as long as they’re only around 1 or 2 of them on each team, but to face all 5 of them is too much. Not everyone who are low ranked are skilled, most of us climbed through hell with random people just to earn a rank. I hope that the match making system would be able to balance out the players on each team so that the game would be enjoyed by all.

Unfair matchmaking

I play league of legends from season 1 on computer, its 1 year i don’t have computer anymore so i was really happy when i saw league of legends on mobile, but really riot can do better Matchmaking, i was gold and on my team i has 2 silver and 2 bronze, of course i lose the game, why did we have silver and bronze with gold player, i understand you are silver 1 and its your promotion match so you have gold in your team, but why silver 4 and bronze 3 with gold 3 ?

The game is really good

The game give the same enjoyment like the pc version because im a player from the pc version since the 1st release of LoL. The mobile version is good yet there is PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW issue because it is in beta test till now i now time will come that those issues will be overcome. First is the communication i think its better if there is an open mic like in the pc version where you can communication the whole team not just the party you have its really hard to help a lane when they didnt know what you are intended to do. Next is the team matching i mean yes i dont know the logic if its the win rate and the rank rate i mean in the pc version i can say it clearly that rank and winrate really is the need to have a good team mates but in this mobile version i cant distingue because i PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW have a team that has the same winrate. And the players although i have a hard time playing sometimes but having a foreign player in a team harden the game because we cant communicate right? I mean its good if the server will be divided into countries so its not that hard to communicate and to team fight. And lastly is the connection sometimes even if you have good connection the game is still lag i dont know why i mean maybe its the server but i know developers will overcome all of those issues!!! God job guys thank you for giving us opportunities to enjoy this game.

Moving into the next year Riot Games released another statement about League of Legends player count, PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS NOW. They had again given a nifty infographic to help understand the state of the game in 2012.

  • 27 Million daily players
  • 8 Million peak concurrent players

Although Riot didn’t release as much information as before it was still apparent League of Legends was still growing. It had taken a lot longer than previously, but Riot had managed to double their monthly and daily players bringing the total monthly players to 67 million.
