Install Windows Mixed Reality software

Launch Mixed Reality Portal

After you plug in your Windows Mixed Reality headset and the driver installs successfully, the Mixed Reality Portal (MRP) will automatically launch on your Desktop. If the portal doesn't launch, you can always open the Mixed Reality portal from Start > Mixed Reality Portal. Once the portal has started, select Get Started

Welcome to Mixed Reality

In Mixed Reality Portal, you can:

  • Display a livestream of the view in your headset (Windows Mixed Reality Ultra only) by selecting "Stop preview" or "Start preview". You can also turn preview on and off on from the mixed reality Start menu.
  • See the status of your headset and controllers. Select "Menu" to see all the info.
  • Set up new controllers. Select Menu > Set up controllers.
  • Turn the boundary on or off. Select Menu > Boundary On / Off. (If you turn it off, you'll need to stay in one spot for safety.)
  • Create a new boundary. Select Menu > Run setup.
  • Get to your mixed reality photos. Select Menu > See mixed reality photos.
  • Get mixed reality apps and games. Select Menu > Get mixed reality apps.

Download Windows Mixed Reality

Windows Mixed Reality is 1 GB in size, and your download times will vary depending on your internet connection. If you hit a message that says "We couldn't download the Mixed Reality software", take a look at these troubleshooting steps.

General troubleshooting

If you run into problems or get an error message while using Mixed Reality Portal, try these solutions.

Restart Windows Mixed Reality

  1. Disconnect your headset from your PC (both cables).
  2. Restart your PC, then reconnect your headset.

Make sure that your PC recognizes your headset

If restarting doesn’t work, make sure that your headset is recognized by your PC. Select Start, type device manager in the search box, and then select it in the list. Expand Mixed reality devices and see if your headset is listed.

If it isn't listed, try the following:

  • Plug the headset into different ports on the PC, if available.
  • Check for the latest software updates from Windows Update.
  • Uninstall and reinstall Windows Mixed Reality:
    1. Disconnect your headset from your PC (both cables).
    2. Select Settings > Mixed reality > Uninstall.
    3. Unpair your motion controllers: select Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Select each controller, and then select Remove device.
    4. To reinstall Windows Mixed Reality, plug your headset back into your PC.

Here are some things to try for error messages you might see.

Portal was a passion project that we built to experiment with other ways of moving data between phones and computers. We built the slickest app we could and have continued to support the app, site and server for over 6 years now.

Unfortunately, over 6 years later, I’m now writing this post because many things have changed and the time has come to close Portal.

Important: The Pushbullet app is not affected by this announcement.

Why close Portal?

We are closing Portal because Google has made changes to both Android and Chrome that prevent Portal from working in the way we built it to work.

Changes to Android

We chose to have Portal put files into the shared storage on your phone so other apps could have access to the files after they were transferred. This played very nicely with other apps, making interactions possible just like on a regular computer. Let’s say you had a game console emulator installed, you could use Portal to drop a bunch of ROMs onto your phone and the emulator was able to find them. The same was true for playing video files, etc.

Android has since moved away from shared storage and all apps will be required to use Scoped Storage in just a couple months. Our philosophy of enabling apps to easily interact with files no longer fits the direction Android has taken.

Changes to Chrome

Starting with Chrome 94, Chrome no longer allows HTTP requests to local IP addresses. Since Portal worked by accessing a local server running on your phone to do all file transfers locally over WiFi, this means Portal no longer works for anyone using Chrome. Since Chrome and Chromium variants have overwhelming browser dominance, this means Portal will soon no longer work for the vast majority of people.

Some final details

We will be shutting down Portal on Friday, October 8th. We have already unpublished the Portal Android app.

Windows 10 KB5005565 issues

Windows 10 KB5005565 update for version 21H2, version 21H1, version 20H2, and version 2004 is apparently plagued with numerous issues. Although Microsoft fixed several bugs with September 2021 cumulative update, it appears that once again the patch has introduced new bugs for some users.

According to user reports, KB5005565 appears to be trashing Intel’s Bluetooth drivers for a few wireless adapters like Intel 720 chip. “The Intel driver would throw a Code 10 error with the fault being “POWER FAILURE”, then Windows would install a broken Bluetooth driver in its place,” a user noted.

In a new update to its support document, Microsoft has confirmed reports of app freezing problems. As per the document, KB5005565 will result in unexpected issues when running some applications. Likewise, you may not be able to open apps or files after deploying the cumulative updates. A white window could also appear when attempting to login.

Thankfully, Microsoft has already developed a fix for Windows 10 app issues and the patch is now rolling out via a server-side update.

“This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices,” Microsoft said.

How to fix 0x0000011b error in Windows 10

Users have been complaining about printing issues with network printers after applying September 2021 cumulative update. For those unaware, this patch addressed the PrintNightmar zero-day vulnerabilities including CVE-2021-26958.

These vulnerabilities were being exploited by threat actors to gain elevated privileges on affected and unpatched devices. Although the update has addressed the security issues, many users are reporting 0x0000011b error when using network-based printing, right after rebooting the system to apply the update.

“Couldn’t connect a shared printer on the host to the VM, just got “Windows cannot connect to the printer” error. In addition, the Quick Books app would not display any printer setup windows and after a while just crashed when trying to open one,” a user explained the problem.

Thankfully, there’s a workaround for 0x0000011b printing errors. To address the 0x0000011b error, open Registry Editor and follow these steps:

  1. In Registry Editor, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print key.
  2. Create a new DWORD-32 bit value.
  3. Name it “RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled”.
  4. Set the value to 0.
  5. Save the changes and close the editor.

It is worth noting that the issue is not restricted to particular hardware. If you’re unable to restore the printing feature, you can also uninstall Windows 10 update manually and pause updates for a few weeks or until a new patch is issued by Microsoft.

Windows Device Portal for Mobile

Starting in Windows 10, Version 1511, additional developer features are available for the mobile device family. These features are available only when Developer mode is enabled on the device.

Set up Windows Device Portal on Windows Phone

Turn on device discovery and pairing

To connect to Windows Device Portal (WDP), you must enable Device discovery and Device Portal in your phone's settings. This lets you pair your phone with a PC or other Windows 10 device. Both devices must be connected to the same subnet of the network by a wired or wireless connection, or they must be connected by USB.

The first time you connect to Device Portal, you are asked for a case-sensitive, 6 character security code. This ensures that you have access to the phone, and keeps you safe from attackers. Press the Pair button on your phone to generate and display the code, then enter the 6 characters into the text box in the browser.

Developer mode device discovery settings

You can choose from 3 ways to connect to Device Portal: USB, local host, and over the local network (including VPN and tethering).

To connect to Device Portal

  1. In your browser, enter the address shown here for the connection type you're using.

    • USB:

    Use this address when the phone is connected to a PC via a USB connection. Both devices must have Windows 10, Version 1511 or later.

    • Localhost:

    Use this address to view Device Portal locally on the phone in Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 Mobile.

    • Local Network:

    Use this address to connect over a local network.

    The IP address of the phone is shown in the Device Portal settings on the phone. HTTPS is required for authentication and secure communication. The hostname (editable in Settings > System > About) can also be used to access Device Portal on the local network (for example, http://Phone360), which is useful for devices that may change networks or IP addresses frequently, or need to be shared.

  2. Press the Pair button on your phone to generate and display the required security code

  3. Enter the 6 character security code into the Device Portal password box in your browser.

  4. (Optional) Check the Remember my computer box in your browser to remember this pairing in the future.

Windows Device Portal for Desktop

Windows Device Portal (WDP) is a device management and debugging tool that lets you configure and manage device settings and view diagnostic information over HTTP from a web browser. For WDP details on other devices, see Windows Device Portal overview.

You can use the WDP for the following:

  • Manage device settings (similar to the Windows Settings app)
  • See and manipulate a list of running processes
  • Install, delete, launch, and terminate apps
  • Change Wi-Fi profiles, view signal strength, and see ipconfig details
  • View live graphs of CPU, memory, I/O, network, and GPU usage
  • Collect process dumps
  • Collect ETW traces
  • Manipulate the isolated storage of sideloaded apps

Set up Windows Device Portal on a Desktop device

Turn on developer mode

Starting in Windows 10, version 1607, some of the newer features for desktop are only available when developer mode is enabled. For information about how to enable developer mode, see Enable your device for development.

Turn on Windows Device Portal

You can enable WDP in the For developers section of Settings. When you enable it, you must also create a corresponding username and password. Do not use your Microsoft account or other Windows credentials.

Once WDP is enabled, you will see web links at the bottom of the section. Take note of the port number appended to the end of the listed URLs: this number is randomly generated when WDP is enabled but should remain consistent between reboots of the desktop.

These links offer two ways to connect to WDP: over the local network (including VPN) or through the local host. Once you connect, it should look something like this:

Registry-based configuration

If you would like to select port numbers for WDP (such as 80 and 443), you can set the following regkeys:

  • Under
    • : A required DWORD. Set this to 0 in order to retain the port numbers you've chosen.
    • : A required DWORD. Contains the port number on which WDP listens for HTTP connections.
    • : A required DWORD. Contains the port number on which WDP listens for HTTPS connections.

Under the same regkey path, you can also turn off the authentication requirement:

  • - for disabled, for enabled.
    • This controls both the basic auth requirement for each connection and the redirect from HTTP to HTTPS.

Command line options for Windows Device Portal

From an administrative command prompt, you can enable and configure parts of WDP. To see the latest set of commands supported on your build, you can run

  • or
    • Turn the service on or off. This still requires developer mode to be enabled.
    • Set a username and password for WDP. The username must conform to Basic Auth standards, so cannot contain a colon (:) and should be built out of standard ASCII characters for example, [a-zA-Z0-9] as browsers do not parse the full character set in a standard way.
    • This resets the SSL certificate cache used for HTTPS connections. If you encounter TLS connection errors that cannot be bypassed (as opposed to the expected certificate warning), this option may fix the problem for you.
    • Run a standalone version of WDP with a specific configuration and visible debug messages. This is most useful for building a packaged plugin.

Troubleshooting

Below are some common errors that you may encounter when setting up Windows Device Portal.

WindowsUpdateSearch returns invalid number of updates (0x800f0950 CBS_E_INVALID_WINDOWS_UPDATE_COUNT)

You may get this error when trying to install the developer packages on a pre-release build of Windows 10. These Feature-on-Demand (FoD) packages are hosted on Windows Update, and downloading them on pre-release builds requires that you opt into flighting. If your installation is not opted into flighting for the right build and ring combination, the payload will not be downloadable. Double-check the following:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and confirm that the Windows Insider account section has your correct account info. If you don't see that section, select Link a Windows Insider account, add your email account, and confirm that it shows up under the Windows Insider account heading (you may need to select Link a Windows Insider account a second time to actually link a newly added account).

  2. Under What kind of content would you like to receive?, make sure Active development of Windows is selected.

  3. Under What pace do you want to get new builds?, make sure Windows Insider Fast is selected.

  4. You should now be able to install the FoDs. If you've confirmed that you're on Windows Insider Fast and still cannot install the FoDs, please provide feedback and attach the log files under C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.

[SC] StartService: OpenService FAILED 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service

You may get this error if the developer packages aren't installed. Without the developer packages, there is no web management service. Try installing the developer packages again.

CBS cannot start download because the system is on metered network (CBS_E_METERED_NETWORK)

You may get this error if you're on a metered internet connection. You won't be able to download the developer packages on a metered connection.

Shared Documentation

WDP is a developer tool shared among all Windows 10 devices. Each product has its own unique features, but the core functionality is the same. Documentation for the main features is found on the Windows Device Portal overview page. The rest of the documentation below will be IoT specific.

Set up

There are two ways to go get the Windows Device Portal up and running.

1. Windows 10 IoT Dashboard

First, you'll want to download the Windows 10 IoT Dashboard, a developer tool that makes it easy to set up new devices. Once you've used the Dashboard to flash a Windows 10 IoT Core image onto your device, check that your device shows up under "My devices".

From there, use the ellipses under "Actions" to select "Open in Device Portal". From there, you'll be taken to the Device Portal authentication page where, unless you changed the credentials initially, the default credentials are:

If you cannot find your device in the dashboard or prefer to skip using the dashboard, you can also open the Device Portal by entering the IP address of your device plus onto the end. When done correctly, it should look something like this:

IoT Core is unique in that it only allows one foreground app to run at one time. The app list is modified to ensure that this is the case. Under the STARTUP column, you can select as many background applications to start by default, but can only set one foreground application.

App File Explorer

The app file explorer shows the directories that your apps can access.

  • CameraRoll is shared among all apps
  • Documents are shared among all apps
  • LocalAppData contains folders specific to each app. This folder will be the same name as your app and other apps cannot access it.

Any system crashes will automatically be logged and available to view through the web management tool. You can then download the kernel dump and try to figure out what's going on.

This is similar to Live kernel dumps, but for the user mode processes. Clicking the download button will cause a 'minidump', and the entire state of that process will be downloaded. This is good for debugging hanging processes.

Bluetooth

This page shows you all the bluetooth paired devices and all the devices that are discoverable. To pair with another Bluetooth device, put the device in pairing mode and wait for it to appear in the available devices list.

Click on Pair link to pair the device. If the device requires a PIN for pairing, it will pop up a message box displaying the PIN. Once the device is paired, it will show up in the Paired devices list. You can unpair the device by clicking on Remove.

Once you navigate to the Bluetooth page, your device will be discoverable by other devices. You can also find it from your PC/Phone and pair it from there.

IoT Onboarding

IoT Onboarding provides support for configuring an IoT device's Wi-Fi connectivity options.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Internet Connection Sharing allows you to share the Internet access of your device with other devices connected to your device over the Wi-Fi SoftAP. To use this feature, your Windows 10 IoT Device needs to have access to the internet (e.g. through a wired LAN connection). In 'Connectivity->Onboarding->SoftAP settings' click 'enable' and set SSID name and password. Then in 'Connectivity->Internet connection sharing' for 'access point adapter' select "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2" and for 'shared network adapter' select your wired ethernet adapter. Finally, click 'start shared access.' Once started, connect a separate Wi-Fi enabled device to the SoftAP on your Windows 10 IoT device. After a connection is established, your separate Wi-Fi enabled device will be able to connect to the internet through your Windows 10 IoT device.

Note

ICS is disabled when a Wi-Fi profile exists on the device. For example, ICS will be disabled if you connect to a Wi-Fi access point and check “Create profile (auto re-connect)”.

SoftAP Settings The SoftAP Settings allow you to control whether or not your device's SoftAP is enabled. It also provides a means for configuring your SoftAP's SSID and the WPA2-PSK key, which are necessary to connect the SoftAP from another device.

AllJoyn Onboarding Settings The AllJoyn Onboarding Settings allow you to control whether or not your device's Wi-Fi connection can be configured through your device's AllJoyn Onboarding Producer. When a separate device running an AllJoyn Onboarding Consumer application connects to your Windows 10 IoT SoftAP, the AllJoyn Onboarding Consumer application can be used to configure your IoT device's Wi-Fi adapter. When enabled, the AllJoyn Onboarding Producer app (IoTOnboarding) uses the ECDHE_NULL authentication method.

To use AllJoyn Onboarding with Windows 10 IoT builds 10.0.14393 or earlier requires an update to the IotOnboarding sample which may be downloaded here.

Access point adapter is the WiFi adapter that act as a WiFi access point (it usually has an IP address like 192.168.137.1). Shared network adapter is the adapter that connects to Internet (e.g.: Ethernet adapter).

SoftAP SSID will be automatically prefixed by "AJ_" if AllJoyn onboarding is enabled and postfixed with the MAC address of the Wifi adapter. The SoftAP passphrase must be between 8 and 63 ASCII characters.

TPM configuration

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a cryptographic coprocessor including capabilities for random number generation, secure generation of cryptographic keys and limitation of their use. It also includes capabilities such as remote attestation and sealed storage. To learn about the TPM and security on IoT Core, visit the Building secure devices page and the TPM page.

To make testing easier, we have a non-signed pre-built version of Limpet.exe available and can be downloaded right from WDP. You just need to go the 'TPM Configuration' tab and click the 'Install Latest' button.

Note

This version of Limpet.exe should not be shipped with your final product. Instead, you need to build the open source project, sign it, and package it with your image.

Azure Clients configuration

IoT devices can be remotely managed through cloud services. Azure provides a rich set of services to enable such scenarios. We have created a device management client that complements Azure's Device Provisioning Service (DPS) and Azure's IoT Hub service on the Windows platform and which also exposes several Windows manageability features.

The clients will be provided as open-source projects. To make testing them easier, we will be providing pre-built binaries. You can use the 'Azure Clients' tab in WDP to install and run those test binaries.

Note

This version of the tools should not be shipped with your final product. Instead, you need to build the open source project, sign it, and package it with your image.

We will update this documentation once the open-source projects are available for consumption.

Remote

The Windows IoT Remote Server allows users to see what their device is displaying without connecting a physical monitor to the keyboard.

Crash Dump Settings for Capturing Memory Dump:

To capture a Full Memory Dump, do the following:

  1. Connect to a IoT device through WDP.

  2. From Debug -> Debug settings -> Kernel crash settings -> Crash dump type.

  3. Select: Complete memory dump (in use memory). Make sure the device is rebooted for the setting to take effect.

  4. Verify that is set to 0x1.

  5. Update to 0x0.

  6. Make sure you have enough space on the device for this Dump to be generated. You can configure the changing the DumpFile location from here:

Launch Mixed Reality Portal

After you plug in your Windows Mixed Reality headset and the driver installs successfully, the Mixed Reality Portal (MRP) will automatically launch on your Desktop. If the portal doesn't launch, you can always open the Mixed Reality portal from Start > Mixed Reality Portal. Once the portal has started, select Get Started

Welcome to Mixed Reality

In Mixed Reality Portal, you can:

  • Display a livestream of the view in your headset (Windows Mixed Reality Ultra only) by selecting "Stop preview" or "Start preview". You can also turn preview on and off on from the mixed reality Start menu.
  • See the status of your headset and controllers. Select "Menu" to see all the info.
  • Set up new controllers. Select Menu > Set up controllers.
  • Turn the boundary on or off. Select Menu > Boundary On / Off. (If you turn it off, you'll need to stay in one spot for safety.)
  • Create a new boundary. Select Menu > Run setup.
  • Get to your mixed reality photos. Select Menu > See mixed reality photos.
  • Get mixed reality apps and games. Select Menu > Get mixed reality apps.

Windows Mixed Reality is 1 GB in size, and your download times will vary depending on your internet connection. If you hit a message that says "We couldn't download the Mixed Reality software", take a look at these troubleshooting steps.

Portal was a passion project that we built to experiment with other ways of moving data between phones and computers. We built the slickest app we could and have continued to support the app, site and server for over 6 years now.

Unfortunately, over 6 years later, I’m now writing this post because many things have changed and the time has come to close Portal.

Important: The Pushbullet app is not affected by this announcement.

Why close Portal?

We are closing Portal because Google has made changes to both Android and Chrome that prevent Portal from working in the way we built it to work.

Changes to Android

We chose to have Portal put files into the shared storage on your phone so other apps could have access to the files after they were transferred. This played very nicely with other apps, making interactions possible just like on a regular computer. Let’s say you had a game console emulator installed, you could use Portal to drop a bunch of ROMs onto your phone and the emulator was able to find them. The same was true for playing video files, etc.

Android has since moved away from shared storage and all apps will be required to use Scoped Storage in just a couple months. Our philosophy of enabling apps to easily interact with files no longer fits the direction Android has taken.

Changes to Chrome

Starting with Chrome 94, Chrome no longer allows HTTP requests to local IP addresses. Since Portal worked by accessing a local server running on your phone to do all file transfers locally over WiFi, this means Portal no longer works for anyone using Chrome. Since Chrome and Chromium variants have overwhelming browser dominance, this means Portal will soon no longer work for the vast majority of people.

Some final details

We will be shutting down Portal on Friday, October 8th. We have already unpublished the Portal Android app.

Windows 10 KB5005565 issues

Windows 10 KB5005565 update for version 21H2, version 21H1, version 20H2, and version 2004 is apparently plagued with numerous issues. Although Microsoft fixed several bugs with September 2021 cumulative update, it appears that once again the patch has introduced new bugs for some users.

According to user reports, KB5005565 appears to be trashing Intel’s Bluetooth drivers for a few wireless adapters like Intel 720 chip. “The Intel driver would throw a Code 10 error with the fault being “POWER FAILURE”, then Windows would install a broken Bluetooth driver in its place,” a user noted.

In a new update to its support document, Microsoft has confirmed reports of app freezing problems. As per the document, KB5005565 will result in unexpected issues when running some applications. Likewise, you may not be able to open apps or files after deploying the cumulative updates. A white window could also appear when attempting to login.

Thankfully, Microsoft has already developed a fix for Windows 10 app issues and the patch is now rolling out via a server-side update.

“This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices,” Microsoft said.

How to fix 0x0000011b error in Windows 10

Users have been complaining about printing issues with network printers after applying September 2021 cumulative update. For those unaware, this patch addressed the PrintNightmar zero-day vulnerabilities including CVE-2021-26958.

These vulnerabilities were being exploited by threat actors to gain elevated privileges on affected and unpatched devices. Although the update has addressed the security issues, many users are reporting 0x0000011b error when using network-based printing, right after rebooting the system to apply the update.

“Couldn’t connect a shared printer on the host to the VM, just got “Windows cannot connect to the printer” error. In addition, the Quick Books app would not display any printer setup windows and after a while just crashed when trying to open one,” a user explained the problem.

Thankfully, there’s a workaround for 0x0000011b printing errors. To address the 0x0000011b error, open Registry Editor and follow these steps:

  1. In Registry Editor, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print key.
  2. Create a new DWORD-32 bit value.
  3. Name it “RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled”.
  4. Set the value to 0.
  5. Save the changes and close the editor.

It is worth noting that the issue is not restricted to particular hardware. If you’re unable to restore the printing feature, you can also uninstall Windows 10 update manually and pause updates for a few weeks or until a new patch is issued by Microsoft.

Windows Device Portal for Mobile

Starting in Windows 10, Version 1511, Windows 10 Портал, additional developer features are available for the mobile device family. These features are available only when Developer mode is enabled on the device.

Set up Windows Device Portal on Windows Phone

Turn on device discovery and pairing

To connect to Windows Device Portal (WDP), you must enable Device discovery and Device Portal in your phone's settings. This lets you pair your phone with a PC or other Windows 10 device. Both devices must be connected to the same subnet of the network by a wired or wireless connection, or they must be connected by USB.

The first time you connect to Device Portal, you are asked for a case-sensitive, 6 character security code. This ensures that you have access to the phone, and keeps you safe from attackers. Press the Pair button Windows 10 Портал your phone to generate and display the code, then enter the 6 characters into the text box in the browser.

Developer mode device discovery settings

You can choose from 3 ways to connect to Device Portal: USB, local host, and over the local network (including VPN and tethering).

To connect to Device Portal

  1. In your browser, enter the address shown here for the connection type you're using.

    • USB:

    Use this address when the phone is connected to a PC via a USB connection. Both devices must have Windows 10, Version 1511 or later.

    • Localhost:

    Use this address to view Device Portal locally on the phone in Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 Mobile.

    • Local Network:

    Use this address to connect over a local network.

    The IP address of the phone is shown in the Device Portal settings on the phone. HTTPS is required for authentication and secure communication. The hostname (editable in Settings > Windows 10 Портал > About) can also be used to access Device Portal on the local network (for example, http://Phone360), which is useful for devices that may change networks or IP addresses frequently, or need to be shared.

  2. Press the Pair button on your phone to generate and display the required security code

  3. Enter the 6 character security code into the Device Portal password Windows 10 Портал in your browser.

  4. (Optional) Check the Remember my computer box in your browser to remember this pairing in the future.

If you are using Device Portal in a protected environment, like a test lab, where you trust everyone on your local network, have no personal information on the device, and have unique requirements, you can disable authentication. Windows Mixed Reality is a platform introduced as part of the Windows 10 operating system, which provides augmented reality and mixed Windows 10 Портал experiences with compatible head-mounted displays.

Its flagship device, Microsoft HoloLens, Windows 10 Портал, was announced at the "Windows 10: The Next Chapter" press event on January 21, 2015[1] It provides a mixed reality experience where a live presentation of physical real-world elements is incorporated with that of virtual elements (referred to as "holograms" by Microsoft[2][3][4][a]) such that they are perceived to exist together in a shared environment. The premier device for Windows Mixed Reality,[5]Microsoft HoloLens is a smart-glasses headset that is a cordless, self-contained Windows 10 computer running Windows 10 Holographic, Windows 10 Портал. It uses various sensors, a high-definition stereoscopic 3D optical head-mounted display, Windows 10 Портал, and spatial sound to allow for augmented reality applications, with a natural user interface that the user interacts with through gaze, voice, and hand gestures.[7][8][9] Codenamed "Project Baraboo", HoloLens had been in development for five years before its announcement in 2015, but was conceived earlier as the original Windows 10 Портал made in late 2007 for what would become the Kinect technology platform.[9][10]

Immersive headsets[edit]

In October 2016 during a hardware event, Microsoft announced that multiple OEMs would release virtual reality headsets for the Windows Holographic platform, based on Microsoft reference designs enabling room-scale virtual reality without Windows 10 Портал sensors or components.[18] In January 2017, prototypes were presented at Consumer Electronics Show for release later in the year,[19] and Microsoft later announced that it planned to release development kits for such headsets during the Game Developers Conference. These devices would be supported by the Windows 10 "Creators Update".[20] At the Game Developers Conference in 2017, Microsoft stated that it intended to support Windows Mixed Reality headsets on Xbox One in 2018, specifically noting the capabilities of the then-upcoming Xbox One X hardware revision, but the company later stated that it was initially focusing Windows 10 Портал PC platforms first, and that it wanted to focus on wireless VR solutions for consoles.[21][22]

Immersive headsets are currently compatible with mixed reality software obtained from Microsoft Store, universal apps, Windows 10 Портал, and Steam VR-compatible software.[26][27] The ability to run desktop software was added on the Windows 10 "May 2019 Update".[28][29]

Microsoft classifies its minimum and recommended system requirements for Windows Mixed Reality as "Windows Mixed Reality PCs" (60 fps) and "Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs" (90 fps). Mixed Reality Portal[edit]

Mixed Reality Portal is a Universal Windows Platform app that serves as a front-end for Windows Mixed Reality. Windows Device Portal

The Windows Device Portal (WDP) lets you configure and manage your device remotely over your local network. The main features are documented on the Windows Device Portal overview page

Shared Documentation

WDP is a developer tool shared among all Windows 10 devices. Each product has its own unique features, but the core functionality is the same. Documentation for the main features is found on the Windows Device Portal overview page. The rest of the documentation below will be IoT specific.

Set up

There are two ways to go get the Windows Device Portal up and running.

1. Windows 10 IoT Dashboard

First, you'll want to download the Windows 10 IoT Dashboard, a developer tool that makes it easy to set up new devices. Once you've used the Dashboard to flash a Windows 10 IoT Core image onto your device, check that your device shows up under "My devices".

From there, use the ellipses under "Actions" to select "Open in Device Portal". From there, you'll be taken to the Device Portal authentication page where, unless you changed the credentials initially, the default credentials are:

If you cannot find your device in the dashboard or prefer to skip using the dashboard, you can also open the Device Portal by entering the IP address of your device plus onto the end. When done correctly, it should look something like this:

Apps

Provides install/uninstall functionality for AppX packages and bundles on your device. App list

IoT Core is unique in that it only allows one foreground app to run at one time. The app list is modified to ensure that this is the case. Under the STARTUP column, you can select as many background applications to start by default, but can only set one foreground application.

App File Explorer

The app file explorer shows the directories that your apps can access.

  • CameraRoll is shared among all apps
  • Documents are shared among all apps
  • LocalAppData contains folders specific to each app. This folder will be the same name as your app and other apps cannot access it.

Bluetooth

This page shows you all the bluetooth paired devices and all the devices that are discoverable. To pair with another Bluetooth device, put the device in pairing mode and wait Windows 10 Портал it to appear in the available devices list.

Click on Pair link to pair the device. If the device requires a PIN for pairing, it will pop up a message box displaying the PIN. Once the device is paired, it will show up in the Paired devices list. Fast tech Archives can unpair the device by clicking on Remove.

Once you navigate to the Bluetooth page, your device will be Windows 10 Портал by other devices. You can also find it from your PC/Phone and pair it from there.

IoT Onboarding

IoT Onboarding provides support for configuring an IoT device's Wi-Fi connectivity options.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Internet Connection Sharing allows you to share the Internet access of your device with other devices connected to your device over the Wi-Fi SoftAP. To use this feature, your Windows 10 IoT Device needs to have access to the internet (e.g, Windows 10 Портал. through a wired LAN connection). In 'Connectivity->Onboarding->SoftAP settings' click 'enable' and set SSID name and password. Then in 'Connectivity->Internet connection sharing' for 'access point adapter' select "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2" and for 'shared network adapter' select your wired ethernet adapter. Finally, click 'start shared access.' Once started, connect a separate Wi-Fi enabled device to the SoftAP on your Windows 10 IoT device. After a connection is established, your separate Wi-Fi enabled device will be able to connect to the internet through your Windows 10 IoT device.

Note

ICS is disabled when a Wi-Fi profile exists on the device. For example, ICS will be disabled if you connect to a Wi-Fi access point and check “Create profile (auto re-connect)”.

SoftAP Settings The SoftAP Settings allow you to control Windows 10 Портал or not your device's SoftAP is enabled. It also provides a means for configuring your SoftAP's SSID and the WPA2-PSK key, which are necessary to connect the SoftAP from another device.

AllJoyn Onboarding Settings The AllJoyn Onboarding Settings allow you to control whether or not your device's Wi-Fi connection can be configured through your device's AllJoyn Onboarding Producer. Note

Access point adapter is the WiFi adapter that act as a WiFi access point (it usually has an IP address like 192.168.137.1). Shared network adapter is the adapter that connects to Internet (e.g.: Ethernet adapter).

SoftAP SSID will be automatically prefixed by "AJ_" if AllJoyn onboarding is enabled and postfixed with the MAC address of the Wifi adapter. The SoftAP passphrase must be between 8 and 63 ASCII characters.

TPM configuration

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a cryptographic coprocessor including capabilities for random number generation, secure generation of cryptographic keys and limitation of their use. It also includes capabilities such as remote attestation and sealed storage. To learn about the TPM and security on IoT Core, visit the Building secure devices page and the TPM page.

To make testing easier, we have a non-signed pre-built version of Limpet.exe available and can be downloaded right from WDP, Windows 10 Портал. You just need to go the 'TPM Configuration' tab and click the 'Install Latest' button.

Note

This version of Limpet.exe should not be shipped with your final product. Instead, you need to build the open source project, sign it, and package it with your image.

Azure Clients configuration

IoT devices can be remotely managed through cloud services. Azure provides a rich set of services to enable such scenarios. We have created a device management client that complements Azure's Device Provisioning Service (DPS) and Azure's IoT Hub service on the Windows platform and which also exposes several Windows manageability features.

The clients will be provided as open-source projects. To make testing them easier, we will be providing pre-built binaries. You can use the 'Azure Clients' tab in WDP to install and run those test binaries.

Note

This version Windows 10 Портал the tools should not be shipped with your final product. Instead, you need to build the open source project, sign it, Windows 10 Портал, and package it with your image.

Crash Dump Settings for Capturing Memory Dump:

To capture a Full Memory Dump, do the following:

  1. Connect to a IoT device through WDP.

  2. From Debug -> Debug settings -> Kernel crash settings -> Crash dump type.

  3. Select: Complete memory dump (in use memory). Make sure the device is rebooted for the setting to take effect.

  4. Verify that is set to 0x1.

  5. Update to 0x0.

Windows Device Portal for Desktop

Windows Device Portal (WDP) is a device management and debugging tool that lets you configure and manage device settings and view diagnostic information over HTTP from a web browser. For WDP details on other devices, see Windows Device Portal overview.

You can use the WDP for the following:

  • Manage device settings (similar to the Windows Settings app)
  • See and manipulate a list of running processes
  • Install, delete, launch, and terminate apps

Turn on developer mode

Starting in Windows 10, version 1607, Windows 10 Портал, some of the newer features for desktop are only available when developer mode is enabled. For information about how to enable developer mode, see Enable your device for development.

You can enable WDP in the For developers section of Settings. When you enable it, you must also create a corresponding username and password. Do not use your Microsoft account or other Windows credentials.

Once WDP is enabled, you will see web links at the bottom of the section. Take note of the port number appended to the end of the listed URLs: this number is randomly generated when WDP is enabled but should remain consistent between reboots of the desktop.

These links offer two ways to connect to WDP: over the local network (including VPN) or through the local host, Windows 10 Портал. Once you connect, it should look something like this:

HTTPS is required for authentication and secure communication.

Registry-based configuration

If you would like to select port numbers for WDP (such as 80 and 443), you can set the following regkeys:

  • Under
    • : A required DWORD. Set this to 0 in order to retain the Windows 10 Портал numbers you've chosen.

Command line options for Windows Device Portal

From an administrative command prompt, you can enable and configure parts of WDP. To see the latest set of commands supported on your build, you can run

    • Turn the service on or off. This still requires developer mode to be enabled.
    • Set a username and password for WDP. The username must conform to Basic Auth standards, so cannot contain a colon (:) and should be built out of standard ASCII characters for example, [a-zA-Z0-9] as browsers do not parse the full character set in a standard way.
    • This resets the SSL certificate cache used for HTTPS connections. If you encounter TLS connection errors that cannot be bypassed (as opposed to the expected certificate warning), this option may fix the problem for you.
    • Run a standalone version of WDP with a specific configuration and visible debug messages. This is most useful for building a packaged plugin.
